Some Thoughts On Treating Abrasions
An abrasion is more or less a serious cut or scrape, and oftentimes it can result in a skin flap, which can be very painful. Some causes of abrasions that come to mind are falling while running on pavement or gravel, brushing up against sharp or rough objects, trying to break a fall, and losing ones balance. Abrasions regularly happen to the hands, the knees and the elbows. Treating such injuries are very important because an abrasion can become infected if bacteria enter the wound. Having an infection would surely be an impediment to your pursuit of survival.

When you or someone else suffers such an injury, having a stocked first aid kit is key. You can treat this type of injury with bandages or tourniquets, and while the healing time will vary you’ll be on the road to recovery if you have it bandaged up right. The key is to do everything you can to prevent an infection.
You want to rinse the area very well with water and then allow it to dry. Then you will want to re-apply the flap and place pressure on it once it is bandaged well. If an abrasion occurs on the knee, its the same thing. Wash the area well with soap and water and bandage it securely. The healing process should be relatively fast, and can be even more expedient if you use an antibiotic ointment on the wound under the bandage. When treated successfully an abrasion doesn’t have to be an impediment to your survival.
What About More Serious Wounds?
A wound is typically thought of as an injury where the skin has been broken or punctured, which can include abrasions, but also includes punctures, lacerations and gunshot wounds. Wounds can range in severity, and it is essential that you have the proper first aid supplies to treat any potential wound. If you’re punctured by a sharp object, be sure to disinfect the area and bandage it properly. Repeat that process and keep it elevated and you’ll see healing. The most important consideration is to ensure that the wound does not become infected. This can be achieved by ensuring that it is wrapped well and not permeable to any bacteria. The wound dressing will need to be changed regularly. Once a day is a good rule of thumb.
With a more serious wound, assessing the situation will be key. If you or someone you love suffers a gunshot wound and the hospital isn’t an option, I am not qualified to comment on that beyond saying this is a scenario you should independently study and prepare for.
