The need for potable drinkable water is an absolute necessity during a grid down situation, and a gravity fed water filtration system is one of the best measures you can take to ensure that the drinking water situation is covered. It is an unfortunate and sad reality that water can contain viruses and bacteria if it is not from a pure source or treated. I’ve never personally become sick from drinking untreated water before, but I’ve seen people who have and it does not look pleasant. It is something I definitely don’t want to be going through when I’m striving to survive.
You could also obtain clean drinking water with reverse osmosis filtration or by distilling your water, but many people happen to prefer a gravity fed water filtration system for its many benefits. As its name suggests, gravity-fed water filtration is a method that uses gravity to filter impurities and contaminants from the water. These can also include pathogens, viruses and bacteria, among other things.
One of the most notable benefits of a gravity-fed water filtration system is that it does not operate on electricity or necessitate any type of water pressure. This is one feature that gives it a leg up over a reverse osmosis or a distilled system. Many folks who are into prepping will make preparations to generate power using solar technology or a traditional generator, but even still not requiring electricity is a considerable benefit for sure.
A gravity fed water filtration system is also lightweight and portable. You could realistically take it with you if you have to get up and go. It wouldn’t fit so great in your bug out bag, but since water is so important you might consider wrapping it in a few garbage bags and carrying it in one of your spare hands as your bag is over your back.
