Treating Bone Fractures

broken bones prepping

Suffering a broken bone or fracture would be one of the worst outcomes you can experience when you are in survival mode. It definitely handicaps you, and the extent of the disadvantage you’ll now find yourself in will depend on which bone you’ve broken. Breaking a finger will obviously be more manageable than breaking your foot or your femur bone in your leg, which will ultimately make you immobile.

There aren’t many items in your first aid kit that can remedy breaking a bone. You will definitely be needing a strong over the counter pain reliever, and this is one of the only potential scenarios that I would recommend having prescription pain relievers for.

Whichever bone you break or fracture, you will be in considerable pain. Unfortunately, this pain will persist and only alleviate slowly during your healing process. If this happens to you or if it happens to a loved one, you will collectively be dealt a real blow in your struggle to survive. If it happens to yourself, the pain you’ll feel will likely be excruciating. If one of your loved ones suffers a bone break or fracture, the discomfort you’ll experience tending to them, especially if you are what they call “an empath” will be considerable.

Important Steps To Take If You Suffer A Bone Fracture

If you’ve broken a bone, whether at home or in the elements at your bug out location, you’ll need to improvise a splint. You can make a splint out of anything with 2 straight sides. You will then tie them together with rope or a belt, or even shoelaces. Padding the splint with soft materials can help in reducing pain. Some good items that make splits are ski poles, old golf clubs that can be sawed down, broomsticks or even tree branches.

Chances are the hospitals are going to be closed, and if they aren’t they are going to be an absolute mad house, overloaded with people suffering serious injuries. A safe bet would be that hospitals are not an option for anyone though. You will have to tend to the situation by yourself now, and when things resume to normal weeks or months later you can seek any orthopedic medical care you might need then. If you are weathering this storm by yourself, having weapons to defend yourself becomes even more important.

There are dietary measures you can take to speed up the recovery of a broken bone, but unfortunately during a grid down scenario you probably won’t be able to eat said diet when you are relying on survival food. There are some supplements you can take to speed up recovery though, and it might be a good idea to have these at your disposal in your first aid preps. The most important vitamin by far would be vitamin K2, which helps calcium absorb into the bone instead of in your arteries. You could also take a calcium supplement which would be helpful, but out of the two vitamin K2 is definitely more effective.

The Mental Anguish A Bone Fracture Brings

If you’ve broken a bone and things have gone haywire and it feels like all hope is lost, don’t give into negative thinking. Things have become harder for you, sure, but these things happen in survival. The important thing is to stick to your plan and be glad that you have an arsenal of weapons at your disposal. The adrenaline produced from the situation will alleviate some of your pain, and hopefully you have a generous supply of pain relievers stocked up. It’s also important to not that you don’t want to advertise your weakness. Stay inside and don’t advertise your bad luck. If people know you are physically vulnerable, that could very easily work against you.
