Survival of any SHTF scenario entails surviving potential attacks from intruders and aggressive vandals, and for this potential scenario you’ll need to have an arsenal of weapons you can rely on. Most people wouldn’t think about a crossbow, but being competent with one and having one to use can be a benefit to any prepper.
For most, the use of a crossbow will probably be more appropriate or more germane when bugging out to an outdoor location. Using a crossbow to defend your home probably isn’t the most ideal option when you could just pull your pistol or shotgun, but when someone sees you have a pistol in your waistband on in a holster and you have an arrow pulled back on your crossbow pointing right at them, they will run in the other direction at the drop of the hat and beg and plead with you not to shoot them. This is a weapon that definitely gives you the upper hand in a potential conflict scenario.
Where do you procure a good crossbow to use though? Luckily, they aren’t very expensive. I purchased this one below and I have been very happy with my purchase. I’ve also obtained several different types of arrows to use with my crossbow and I haven’t noticed too much of a difference based on what arrows I fire. I’m taking a different approach with this weapon, and I’m stashing it at my primary bug out location in case I have to leave my home. At home I have a sword, machete and several different firearms I can rely on to defend myself and my home.
Practice Using Your Crossbow
I have set up a standard archery target in my backyard and I get some practice in with my crossbow about once a week on average. I feel very comfortable with it now, whereas before when I first purchased it I didn’t have a good feel for it in the beginning. I’m taking a different approach.
Crossbows Are Better For Hunting
As mentioned, a crossbow will suit your needs much better if you are bugging out as opposed to weathering the storm from home. When you’re hunkering down at home, there are a plethora of options you can fall back on as far as weapons go. Having a crossbow drawn and pointed right at you would probably make you need to throw your pants away after sure, but is it worth it to make that type of statement when you can just pull your pistol or cock your shotgun? Maybe for some it is. Especially for those who live in countries where procuring a gun and ammunition is next to impossible.
I bought my crossbow because I enjoy hunting and I like the thought of having it with me if I have to bug out. Having it with me will be a cure for boredom if nothing else, and on the plus side maybe I can get a few venison dinners on my wood burning camp stove out of it. Considering how affordable a basic crossbow and the arrows are, I figured why not! I happened to sharpen my archery skills, and even got a wild turkey last fall that we dressed and got ready just in time for Thanksgiving.
