When you live in an urban or suburban environment, hunkering down at home to survive a SHTF scenario is the most likely outcome. That being the case, protecting the perimeter of your domicile is key in preventing unwanted visitors or intruders. Your windows are potentially the most vulnerable points of entry into your home. Planting thorny plants and thorny bushes at the base of your home just under your windows is an incredible security measure that is very effective.
Windows pose a certain vulnerability that doors don’t possess. A window can be broken relatively easily. It is highly recommended that your ground floor windows be boarded up from the inside and the outside, but these boards can also be removed with a crowbar or other tool, putting you right back where you started with the vulnerability issue of windows. An intruder will attempt to enter through a window over a door most times. Not only for the ease of entry, but because of the element of surprise as well.
Whether you call them pickers, thorns or a briar patch, getting stuck with these things hurts, and people and animals instinctively know that and avoid them at all costs. Almost nobody is likely to try to enter your boarded up window if their clothing is matted with pickers as a result. Not to mention that their skin could also be punctured.
Planting these types of thorny plants and bushes is one of the most efficient and successful ways of securing the perimeter of your home. Even if a potential intruder thinks something is inside, they will shift their attention to a different home to try to enter. The juice won’t be worth the squeeze for them. These things really hurt, and you might know that from experience if you’ve ever been walking in the woods not paying attention. Who is going to attempt to enter with this as an obstacle to entry? Nobody. Not even people who aren’t in their right mind.
It’s important to remember that people will be in a state of desperation. They will do anything to get food or drinkable water for them or their family, and if that means breaking into your home and facing a potential conflict with you people will be that desperate. This is essentially going to be a battle for survival, and you have to plan for every possible outcome.
You put yourself in a much better position with home defense when the only potential area to defend is the front door. When all you have to worry about is your front door and you own a shotgun and various other weapons, that’s going to put you in a much more secure place than most people. Those who are unprepared will have a tough go of things all around, and worrying about people potentially invading your domicile by force at any time is yet another vulnerability they will be faced with. When your home defense is strategized, you definitely sleep better, and getting some sleep to function well under duress is going to be absolutely critical.
Not everyone will take this step. It could seem like overkill to some people. We really think it is worth doing if you feel as certain as we do that we will be forced into a state of survival. Rarely will you find important access points for repairs to your home underneath the windows, and once we have successfully survived a SHTF event, you can always remove them when we get to a point where it feels like they don’t serve a purpose. If you live in an urban high crime area, they can always serve a purpose though.
