Prepping in the city and on the cul de sac

Frequently asked questions

1.)  What are these terms I keep seeing in your posts like SHTF and grid down scenario mean?

A:  SHTF is an acronym.  It stands for when sh*t hits the fan.  A grid down scenario is in reference to the power grid going down for an extended time where we won’t be able to access conventional electricity.

2.) Why do I need to prep? Shouldn’t I have confidence that the government will help me if something really bad happens?

A:  There is a chance that the government will be able to help you survive a catastrophic situation. There is also a chance that they might not be able to. If the latter happens to be the case, you need to be prepared and have supplies to weather the storm.

3.)  Will I become a social outcast if I start prepping?

A:  Not if you don’t tell anybody! In all seriousness though, telling people you are preparing should be just fine. Telling people the extent to which you’re preparing is a bad idea for multiple reasons, including that people will likely gossip about you. They will also be showing up at your front door when the SHTF.

4.)  What if I can’t afford to prep?

A:  Everyone can afford to get started. You can buy canned food at your grocery store for less than $1. Other supplies that you will need are inexpensive as well. Most of the items that you will need to survive a catastrophic situation can be procured with any budget. Most of the expensive items people buy have suitable cheaper alternatives as well.

5.)  Should I join a prepper community?

A:  We advise against that. We have written a blog post breaking down all the reasons why. You really shouldn’t tell anyone outside of your immediate family what you are doing and what your preps are for good reason.

6.) Is there a chance that the scenario we have to endure will be so catastrophic that supplies and preps won’t do us any good?

A: This is such an unlikely scenario that we almost feel compelled to say it is impossible. I guess nothing is impossible though. We’ve brainstormed every potential scenario we see as a possibility, and we don’t envision any scenario where more than 1-2 months of survival is necessary.
