Going Off The Grid

For many people in the prepper space, there’s a feeling that going off the grid is the only feasible solution for survival. While we don’t necessarily agree with that assertion, there are a lot of benefits. There’s no better way to prepare yourself for a grid down scenario than if you’re accustomed to living off the grid already! While that might sound like a Wednesday for such folks, there are other things to take into consideration, like the desperate masses who can become very unpredictable during times of such pandemonium. Being accustomed to off grid living does definitely help a lot and puts said people in a very favorable position of survival though without question. Unfortunately, for most this just isn’t an option, but for those who find a way to make it work

Generators

When you are not connected to the electric grid, obviously you will need to rely on a generator or generators. Many people who adopt the off grid lifestyle tend to use considerably less electricity, and fire up the generator for a few hours a day perhaps. The best option for being in the spirit of off grid living would be a solar generator, but gas power generators are common as well. A solar powered plug in station is also a really valuable gadget to have for anyone who purposely doesn’t connect to the grid. With a sharp decline in electrical use, usually one appliance or gadget like the cell phone is all someone is looking to power up most of the time.

Water Resources

If you want to go totally off grid, the answer for electric is pretty simple. What do you do about water though? There is no gas or solar powered machine that can produce potable, drinkable water for you. Not one we’re aware of anyways.

What About Food?

In an off grid scenario, you could probably grow an abundance of food to feed you and your family. Here’s the thing though…………even if you are in a very rural environment with low population density, someone will be coming to pillage any gardens you have. They will steal your egg laying hens too. Having secret, storable food like canned goods and freeze dried food is an absolute must. Even though you’re used to living without the electrical grid, almost nobody else is, and the most pious individual or friendliest neighbor will turn into a thief when they are trying to avoid starvation.

Closing Thoughts

There are a lot of benefits to being off grid. Is going off grid essential to survival in the future though? Not at all. There are arguments that could be made for people in the suburbs and even most urban environments being just as equipped to survive if they take similar measures. One could even argue that those are the people who have an advantage. It really comes down to personal preference. If living an off grid lifestyle in your normal day to day life is preferable, then that would probably be the best option for you. If that isn’t the way you would prefer to live, there is no reason to go off grid while you wait for the you know what to hit the fan. You will need all of the same things that you’ll need for your home.
