Mace or pepper spray probably aren’t the first items of self defense that come to mind when you’re strategizing defending your home from potential attackers. Quite frankly, there’s a reason for that and they don’t rank in the top choices of weapons you can equip yourself with for a SHTF scenario. When you consider how affordable they are though, it really does make sense to add mace or pepper spray to your list of preps. Taking pepper spray to the eyes is much worse than it sounds if you haven’t experienced it. It causes a powerful burning sensation coupled with involuntary eyelid closure that essentially causes temporary blindness. It is a very unpleasant and painful sensation. The effects last for at least 20 minutes and can persist for up to 90 minutes. Those first 20 minutes likely feel more like 20 hours though. It’s grueling.

It’s good to use a canister that has a spray range of at least 10 feet, and also one that can provide more than one shot if there’s more than one threat. If you’re not taking spray range into account, you might run the risk of catching some residual, so it is very important to consciously close your eyes if you need to spray from close range. If you don’t, they will be catching the worst of it by far, but you will feel some effects too, and they are very unpleasant. Be sure that you are familiar with your spray device and how to use it, and be aware of the nozzle and which way it is pointing. Test it at least once to see how far it sprays, and do not walk in the direction you sprayed it afterwards!
It can also be used on animals that appear ready to attack you, like hungry and aggressive stray dogs. I am very against cruelty to animals and causing animals harm, but if a dog is about to bite me and potentially give me rabies or worse, knowing the dog will be fine again in 20 minutes removes any hesitation for me to pepper spray a rabid dog about to attack. This could also be useful for predator animals in the forest that could potentially do you harm as well.

This thing shoots off a pepper spray bomb, reminiscent of a grenade launcher. People might band together as roaming gangs.to overpower the vulnerable and take their food and supplies. If said people are big and strong, a gang of 4 or 5 could pretty easily dominate anyone they come across, like taking candy from a baby. With a pepper spray launcher you can subdue a crowd of people, let alone a gang of half a dozen or less. We cannot recommend this item highly enough!
