When you’re living in a grid down scenario, the survival foods you rely on should be nutrient dense to fuel your body with what it needs during tough times, and powdered milk definitely fits that description. Powdered milk is such a great option for your prepper pantry because of its potentially indefinite shelf life and versatile uses in cooking besides just drinking it.
Powdered milk will give you a plethora of nutrients that you will be needing. This includes the fat soluble vitamins A, D and E, in addition to most of the B vitamins including vitamin B12, also known as Cobalamin. Milk in its powdered form also has an abundance of minerals like calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, selenium and zinc. On top of all of that, you get much needed protein. This is a powerhouse of nutrition. These are things your body will desperately need during a time of survival.

Why Powdered Milk Should Be Considered
With powdered milk you can make food items like biscuits and pancakes with other items you’ll have in your food preps like flour. You can also get powdered buttermilk if that is something you would enjoy. I haven’t tried powdered buttermilk yet, but I do know that biscuits taste better with buttermilk, so I might be needing to give that a try.
One benefit to powdered milk is that if it’s packaged right and stored in a cool dry place, its shelf life is indefinite. That’s really incredible and makes this a must have item for your prepper pantry. With some canned foods you run the risk of needing them past their expiration date. This won’t be the case with staples like powdered milk, powdered eggs and our personal favorite pemmican. This provides security and great peace of mind.

We’ve made mention in a post how awful it would be to suffer a bone fracture as society is crumbling down around us and the emergency room isn’t an option. If you’re deficient in calcium and other minerals, you’ll find yourself susceptible with weak and brittle bones. You can become vulnerable to a plethora of health conditions when you are nutrient deficient. That’s why foods like powdered milk, powdered eggs and pemmican are so essential to your food preps.
Other Thoughts On Powdered Milk For Preppers
The nutrition difference between powdered milk and fresh milk is negligible. The nutrients are preserved in the drying process in which the moisture is extracted. Moisture is then reintroduced when you reconstitute it with water in powdered form. You’ll want to test out different water ratios to see which consistency you like best. If it tastes like skim milk, and that’s not what you’re going for, just use less water.
I happen to rely on milk in my day to day life as a cornerstone of my diet. I also like buying my milk from a farm from cows that live on pasture instead of in a feed lot. Milk has an abundance of nutrients. In varying levels, milk has just about every nutrient you need with the exception of vitamin C and iron. You can get all the iron you need from your canned meats. That just leaves vitamin C, which you can get from your dehydrated or freeze dried fruits. So with milk you are giving your body just about everything it needs, and that is key when you consider the stress your body will be under when you’re weathering the storm.
Powdered milk doesn’t taste as great as the creamy delicious milk I buy from the farm, but that’s just something you have to expect and live with when the grid is down and we are trying to survive. I definitely have powdered milk in my food preps, and I am very glad to have it. Knowing that I can give my body a well balanced combination of vitamins and minerals every day that I’m struggling to survive gives me a sense of confidence.
