Survival Food For Vegans and Vegetarians

If you are living a plant based lifestyle, you might think food storage for survival is more difficult for you, but it really doesn’t have to be. Survival food for vegetarians and vegans.

You might think that a good course of action might be to stock up on jars of peanut butter.  After all, you’ll get the protein you need and effectively satiate hunger. While having a few jars in your food preps might be a good idea, there is an important factor to keep in mind – the expiration date on most jars of peanut butter I’m seeing in the grocery store ranges from 6 to 9 months. The times of survival we anticipate might occur one year from now.

As a vegan or vegetarian you do have a wide plethora of options when it comes to survival food. Many of the storable food items that someone plant based can accumulate will also be in the preps of people who make animal based foods the cornerstone of their diet. There are a number of considerations that come into play though, and not all plant based survival food is considered equal.

If you follow a plant based lifestyle, your primary focus in your food preps should be on nutrients. Being nutrient deficient in a time of pandemonium when you need to keep your wits about you is obviously not ideal. Plants don’t contain 15 nutrients, so it might be a good idea to have supplements in your preps of some of the most important ones like B12 and Vitamin D. You need both physical energy and mental acuity to survive, and while its better than starving in general obviously, being severely nutrient deficient puts you at a disadvantage when everything is on the line.

When it comes to the wide variety of canned foods that are possible for your food storage, opt for quality if you can. The price difference typically isn’t that noticeable or extreme, and it’s well worth it in my opinion. You can safely go past the expiration date on canned goods you buy in stores or online, but for real security and a really long shelf life you might want to check out an LDS cannery for some of your food preps. Do a search online to see if one is local to you. You definitely don’t have to be Mormon to buy from their store, and they won’t try to convert you either. It’s an easy transaction, and you can find foods that have a shelf life of two decades! These bulk items they sell are especially helpful if you’re preparing for other people in addition to yourself.
